Travel Vaccination

Cholera Vaccine

Straightforward protection for travellers heading into cholera-risk regions.

What is cholera, and why does it matter for travellers?

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, usually picked up from contaminated water or food. Most infections are mild, but a small proportion of cases lead to severe, watery diarrhoea and rapid dehydration, which can become life-threatening within hours if untreated.

Outbreaks tend to cluster in areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation, including parts of sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and parts of the Caribbean and Central and South America, particularly after flooding, conflict, or natural disasters disrupt normal infrastructure.

Aid and healthcare workers

Deploying into disaster response zones, refugee settings, or active outbreak areas.

Common questions

Do I need this vaccine to enter a country?

Cholera vaccination is not usually a formal entry requirement, but it is often recommended based on your itinerary and the areas you'll be visiting. We'll advise you during your consultation.

Can I have it if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

This needs to be assessed individually. Please mention it during your consultation so our clinicians can advise on the safest option for your trip.

What if I miss part of my course?

Let us know as soon as possible. In some cases the course can be restarted or adjusted; our team will talk you through the best next step.

Does the vaccine replace safe food and water practices?

No. It's an added layer of protection, not a substitute. Sticking to bottled or treated water and thoroughly cooked food remains important wherever cholera risk exists.
