What is meningococcal disease, and why is it taken seriously?
Meningococcal disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, spread through close contact and respiratory droplets. It can lead to meningitis, inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord, and septicaemia, blood poisoning, both of which can progress rapidly.
Transmission risk is higher in the so-called meningitis belt across sub-Saharan Africa, and vaccination against it is a mandatory entry requirement for pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah.

Questions about the meningococcal vaccine
Is this vaccine mandatory?
It's a formal requirement for pilgrims travelling to Saudi Arabia for Hajj or Umrah. For travel to the African meningitis belt, it's strongly recommended rather than mandatory.
How long does protection last?
Around five years for most people. A booster may be recommended if you travel to risk areas again after that.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes, if your destination requires proof of vaccination, we'll provide official documentation on the day.
Can I have this alongside other travel vaccines?
Yes, it can usually be given in the same visit as your other travel vaccines. We'll confirm this during your consultation.
