What is tetanus, and why do travellers need a booster?
Tetanus is caused by bacteria commonly found in soil and dust, entering the body through cuts, burns, or wounds. It isn't spread from person to person, but it can cause severe muscle stiffness and painful spasms.
Because the bacteria are found almost everywhere, tetanus risk isn't really about which country you're visiting, it's about how long it's been since your last dose and how likely you are to pick up an injury, for example while trekking, cycling, or doing manual or volunteer work abroad.
Who should consider a booster?
Anyone overdue a booster
It's been ten years or more since your last dose.
Trekkers, cyclists, and outdoor travellers
Activities with a higher chance of cuts, scrapes, or falls.
Volunteers doing manual or construction work
Physical work abroad carries a higher injury risk.
Travellers with limited access to care
Heading somewhere medical treatment may not be immediately available.

Questions about the tetanus vaccine
I had a booster after a cut a few years ago, do I still need one?
It depends on the timing and the type of wound. Mention this during your consultation and we'll advise on whether another dose is needed.
Is it combined with other vaccines?
Yes, it's usually combined with diphtheria and polio in a single injection.
What if I get a wound while travelling?
Clean it thoroughly and seek medical advice, especially for deep or dirty wounds, regardless of your vaccination status.
Are there any side effects?
Mild soreness at the injection site is common and usually settles quickly.
